Job Description

Overview

High Road School of Bloomington is hiring a consulting Registered Nurse to over see the health policies of the school and the training of and delegation of medical administration to select staff members.


Responsibilities

School Opening Procedures

  • Develops and maintains health cards for all students.
  • Maintains emergency forms with contacts and phone numbers for all students.
  • Maintains a medical emergency response plan in case of a life-threatening situation in the school.
  • Maintains a staff emergency contact list.

 Information Management

  • Promotes health and safety in the school environment.
  • Responsible for developing and evaluating school health policies.
  • Provides case management services, serving as a liaison between school personnel, family, community and health providers.
  • Assesses the overall system of care and develops a plan for assuring that health needs are met.
  • Supports student success by providing health care assessment, intervention, and follow-up for all children within the school setting.
  • Advances the well being, academic success, and life-long achievement of students.
  • Facilitates positive student responses to normal human development.
  • Provides case management services.
  • Actively collaborates with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self-management, self-advocacy and learning.
  • Addresses the physical, mental, emotional and social health of students.
  • Develops a plan for responding to emergencies and disasters and training staff to respond appropriately.                                                                                

Documentation

  • Maintains up to date records for medication administration throughout the year.
  • Documents the care provided, observed outcomes and assures confidentiality.
  • Maintains medical files on all students.
  • Maintains log of all student visits, including time, grade, reason and care provided.
  • Maintains log of all students under the care of a physician’s order for medication, including student name, medication name, dosage, physician name/phone number, and ending date of usage.

 Medication Management

  • Trains select staff on medication administration procedures and delegates to those staff the ability to administer medication
  • Administers medication following school policy, including obtaining/following physician’s order/guardian permission, and dispensing from original prescription container.
  • Ensures authorizations are current for daily, emergency and over the counter medications.
  • Observes/responds appropriately to student behavior following medication administration.
  • Consults, as needed, with student physician during medication usage.
  • Updates/submits biannually the Administration of Medication Policy for approval by the Illinois State Board of Education

Communication

  • Maintains consistent communication with Education Director to ensure needed information is shared.
  • Acts as confidant and may need to advise students on sensitive topics.
  • Issues health alerts, such as communicable conditions to parents and the community when advisable.
  • Keeps the lines of communication regarding student health open between school faculty, parents and healthcare professionals.
  • Assists guardians in selecting/securing agency help regarding proper diagnosis/treatment for student.

Health Education

  • Assesses the physical environment of the school and takes actions to improve health and safety.
  • Provides health education by providing health information directly to individual students, groups of students or classes, using posters and conferences, for example.
  • Provides programs to staff, families and the community on health topics, including safety from substance abuse and sexual behaviors.
  • Takes a leadership role in the development and evaluation of school health and safety policies, and maintains a related resource file, (by corresponding with relevant agencies, if needed).
  • Works with parents and school faculty to minimize student exposure to communicable conditions.
  • Supports the physical, mental, emotional, and social health of students and their success in the learning process.
  • Attends school health related professional development workshops, as needed. 

First Aid and Other Health Services

  • Provides first aid for injuries and maintains students’ well-being by administering medications and treatments as prescribed by students’ physician.
  • Provides leadership to the school in implementing precautions for blood borne pathogens and other infectious diseases.
  • Takes care of minor medical issues, such as scrapes and splinters.
  • Takes care of ill students until parents are able to pick up the student, when necessary.
  • Makes referral recommendations for further medical treatment should there be a major problem or to prevent a potential health problem.
  • Promotes the prevention of injuries within the school and grounds, as well as providing for the physical safety and good health of students.
  • Works with the food service personnel to ensure proper nutrition for the students and to ensure knowledge of potential diabetic issues and anaphylaxis prevention.
  • Provides for student PRN needs.
  • Performs duties as required by Education Director.


Job Requirements



Requirements for hire include a valid RN license, as required by contract. Pediatric experience is desirable, but not necessary. RN license and a Basic Life Support CPR - Professional Rescuer or Healthcare Provider card, as required by contract.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT/WORKING CONDITIONS:

Light lifting, walking, climbing stairs. Most programs are in school settings.
