Overview

The Nutrition Educator is responsible for preparation and delivery of nutrition-centered lessons for students within the classroom environment.  This position also involves outreach to bring more parents and caregivers into Eat.Right.Philly programming. Activities may include community, school and public events, such as health fairs, community days, and events held at key organizations that attract and serve parents, caregivers, and community members, as well as direct nutrition education for parents and/or students. 


Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities may include: 

  • Implements nutrition education training programs and training modules for all school-age children
  • Works with children and parents to develop proper nutrition and eating habits
  • Prepares food items needed for taste testing or sampling
  • Organizes and participates in workshops for nutrition education
  • Support coordinators with demonstration lessons for individual classroom teachers as requested
  • Conducts nutrition education training for teachers, nurses and school-based administrative staff
  • Conducts parent workshops in schools on basic nutrition concepts
  • Collects and properly completes documentation for program sustainability
  • Administers evaluative tools for nutrition education programs to assist with the evaluation of program effectiveness
  • Acts as a liaison for School Health/Wellness Councils

  • Identification and outreach to school and community organizations in targeted communities.
  • Provide community education about Nutrition programming available through Eat.Right.Philly.
  • Promote Eat.Right.Philly. and their services at various community outreach events such as health fairs, and community days.
  • Maintain and track outreach data, including dates and types of events, number of individuals reached through group or one-on-one communication, and referrals made

Core Knowledge and Skills

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of nutrition education.
  • Knowledge of food values and nutrition.
  • Ability to implement nutrition education programs for multiple audiences.
  • Ability to prepare materials for training.

 


Job Requirements



Education and Experience

    • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in public health, education, nutrition or dietetics.
    • Two years of professional experience in nutrition or dietetics which has included conducting nutrition education training or equivalent combination of training and experience.

      • Personal commitment to promoting and being a role model for healthy eating and physical activity.
      • Provide school staff with strategies to support a school environment that encourages and promotes healthy behaviors.
      • Capable of physical aspects of work, including lifting and stair climbing.
      • Proficiency with using email and MS Office applications.
      • Ability to acquire, maintain and submit all required clearances for school personnel.
      • Knowledge of safe food-handling practices (ServSafe certification a plus)
  • Must be willing to travel locally. Valid driver’s license and vehicle required.
